Suicidal Ideation – Essay Sample

Introduction 

Some patients visit the hospital and want to use the ER (Emergence Room) service. However, the nurses who have to provide intervention in the facility may lack the competence needed in carrying out an appropriate assessment of the patient. Several healthcare facilities may have witnessed a similar incidence, which puts the life of the patient at risk. In this respect, it is essential for the nurses to improve their competence, particularly in handling patient with suicidal ideation, specifically in conducting a behavioral risk assessment for patients in the ER that have suicidal ideation to prevent them from committing suicide if discharge. In nursing, the objective is to learn the policies and procedures that should be adhered to patients who contemplate suicide. Secondly, working with such patients requires collaboration between nurses and therapists, as it essential to understand the thoughts of such patient, particularly if they are ready to recuperate at home. Another objective is to protect and improve health of the patients, as caregivers provide the needed intervention to the patient. This paper examines the behavioral risk assessment for patients in the ER, particularly patients with suicidal ideation to prevent them from committing suicide when discharged.

Problem Statement

Patients have increasingly used the ER service, hoping that they will find the best intervention procedure, which would effectively address their health needs. Ideally, the ER has to respond quickly to the patient, as it is essential to save the life of the patient. However, some of the nurses in the ER may not be aware of the needed behavioral assessment for suicidal ideation patient (Wortzel et al., 2014). For this reason, the patient remains at risk, even after using the ER service. In most cases, some of the errors emanate from the assumption that such patient can effectively recover at home. However, some patients may not be aware of what they need to do, to improve their health condition, as they recover from home. This calls for competence in nurses working in the ER, especially in assessing the patients with suicidal ideation (Bertoli & de Leeuw, 2016). The nurses failed to respond on time, which later led to the death of the patient. To avoid such situation from recurring in future, nurses have to rethink the assessment procedure used, work in collaboration, and conduct behavioral assessment, to establish the mental stability of the patient.

Working with the preceptor

The role of the preceptor is to facilitate the learning process within the healthcare facility, playing an active role in helping students to master effective ways of handling patients admitted in the hospital. The preceptor plays a critical role in the demonstration of the nursing action and providing useful feedback, which helps understand the areas that require improvement, particularly in behavioral assessment. In this case, I have a chance of enhancing my skills in this setting, through working closely with the preceptor. The interaction between the patient and preceptors provides a mentoring opportunity, which enhances the confidence and skills as a nursing student (Billett, 2016). The nursing preceptor will respond to the question asked. Additionally, she will explain the basis of the decisions and actions considered. Besides, the preceptor plays an essential role in designing of the learning experience and patients care assignments.
